Fire safety tips to help keep you and your family safe

Too many people are losing their lives in fires. As any fire investigator will tell you, I know that a lot of fire deaths and injuries can be avoided by following a few simple steps.

  1. Put a smoke detector on every level of your home and maintain them.
  2. Close bedroom doors when going to sleep or when you leave your home. 'CLOSE BEFORE YOU DOZE'.
  3. Set up an exit plan and have multiple means of egress. Make sure everyone in the home is aware and have a place to meet once out of the home.
  4. Purchase a fire ladder
  5. Exit first, then call 911
  6. Never re-enter a burning home
  7. Never leave a burning candle in a room by itself
  8. Don’t sleep with space heaters
  9. Get a fire extinguisher
  10. When cooking, have a pan cover or cookie sheet nearby to cover the pan in the event of a grease fire.
  11. For oven fires, only when possible, make sure you keep the oven door closed and turn off the gas and exit the home.
